Corner Cottage, St Albans

Corner Cottage, a 17th century property in St Albans, Hertfordshire has been thoughtfully restored to balance architectural heritage with the demands of modern living. Delivered in collaboration with Copper Bottom Construction, the objective was to retain the defining features of the original structure, while introducing a clear, contemporary residential scheme.

Martin Edwards Reclamation supplied a range of authentic reclaimed materials, specified across both the interior and exterior to ensure consistency of tone, texture and performance.

Reclaimed pine flooring, sourced from a former corn exchange in Manchester, is used extensively throughout, providing a robust and characterful surface that anchors the scheme. Pitch pine beams have been carefully integrated as both structural and visual elements, reinforcing the building’s identity, while exposed heritage brickwork introduces contrast and depth, revealing the fabric of the original construction.

Drawing on a recurring theme of clever repurposing, clay pipes have been repurposed to form a distinctive wine storage solution, adding both function and texture at lower ground level.

Traditional-style radiators deliver current performance standards without compromising the visual integrity of the space, while rosemary tiles have been sourced to match seamlessly with the existing fabric, ensuring continuity across the full refurbishment.

Externally, reclaimed paving establishes a clear relationship between the house and its setting, completing a coherent material palette.

The result is a controlled, well-resolved scheme that respects the building’s history while delivering a functional, contemporary home, defined by material quality, durability and attention to detail.
